Cultured marble belongs
to the family of cast polymers. Cast polymers are a mixture of an
unsaturated polyester resin, highly filled with inorganic
particulates and pigments. Fillers used are engineered calcium
carbonates for cultured marble, aluminum tri-hydrate for onyx, and
aluminum tri-hydrate with a suspension of specialty formulated color
chips for cultured granite.
How is cultured marble made?
Cultured marble is blended together with
polyester resin, catalyst, fillers, and pigments and poured into
molds that are
coated with a clear gel coat. The gel coat
produces a tough, non-porous, glossy surface that is very resistant
to stain and easy to maintain.
The shape of the product depends on the molds
used. The colors and veining of the finished product depend on the
calculations of the manufacturer/pourer.
The catalyst used will cause
a chemical reaction and make the resin polymerize and harden. After
the marble has set up it is de-molded, trimmed, ground, polished,
and finally inspected before going out to be installed.
What are the advantages of cultured marble?
Cultured marble is coated with a gel coat that
makes it water proof, durable, and has UVA protection. Cultured
marble has minimal seams, and when installed properly using a mildew
resistant 100% silicone, it becomes virtually leak proof.
Tubs are cast with the deck and tub bowl in one solid piece. Vanity
tops typically have the bowl cast as an integral part of the vanity
deck, avoiding potential unsightly seams between the bowl and
vanity. Showers are typically only seamed at the corners and are
trimmed out with corner cove.
Why should I use cultured marble in my bathroom?
Cultured marble is sealed and non-porous making
it sanitary and virtually impermeable to stains and water. It is a
low maintenance product that has minimal seams, cutting down leakage
and allergy causing mold and mildew problems.
Real marble is a naturally porous stone and
will stain easily. Natural stone products need to be disinfected
and re-sealed every 6-12 months. Tile has ongoing problems with
mold and mildew growing in the grout joints making it high
maintenance and unsanitary.
